WEST BRANCH OF THE PENOBSCOT RIVER CANOE TRIP (3 night)
(Lobster Trip to Umbazooksus Stream)

A perfect family and group canoeing experience, the West Branch of the Penobscot River canoe trip is one for both beginners, vacationers, and all outdoor enthusiasts.

On our 3 night/4 day trip we'll paddle over 25 miles from the Penobscot Farm put in, down the scenic West Branch of the Penobscot River into beautiful Chesuncook Lake, and take out at Umbazooksus Stream. We'll also spend some time visiting the famous Chesuncook Village, the only village in Maine that is accessible only by plane, boat or snowmobile.

Chesuncook Village is home to just a handful of year-round residents. One of them, Jack Murphy, who operates Chesuncook’s only store. Actually, the store inventory is limited to three things: home-made root beer kept ice cold in an old-fashioned fridge, home made bread, and soft, sweet fudge in a dozen or so flavors.
The trip covers a portion of the journey that Henry David Thoreau took during one of his trips "To the Maine Woods". Wildlife sightings are common and the views of Maine's Katahdin, in the distance from Chesuncook Lake, are striking. Mostly a flat water canoe trip, the West Branch of the Penobscot River has plenty of current for beginning canoeists to learn paddle strokes, and test their skills on a wild Maine river. Campsites each night will be riverside and on Black Pond or beautiful Chesuncook Lake. Each day there will be plenty of time for relaxing, swimming, fishing, or moose watching.
